Price is a decision, not a field

A rules-based pricing engine that sets the right number for this hour, this region, this shopper — and tells you exactly why.

See a worked example

Three ways to move a price

Discount, markup, or an outright fixed price. A platform that can only discount can only give margin away.

Conditional by design

Timing, catalogue, location and session conditions, combined with AND across categories and OR within one.

Every price is explainable

Each response returns the rules that fired and what each one contributed. No model to trust.

Why a price needs to change

A price is rarely wrong on its own. It’s wrong for a moment.

For this hour, this region, this shopper, this stock position. There are four reasons a merchant wants a different number than the one on the product, and almost every pricing decision is one of them.

Shape demand

Move purchases into the periods that need them. Quiet weekday afternoons, weekend mornings, the tail end of a season. The product hasn’t changed; the demand curve has.

Protect margin

Some sales cost more to serve than others — affiliate commission, fragile packaging, a market with different landed costs. The list price was set for the average order, not this one.

Clear inventory

Stock that is about to age out, seasonal lines, discontinued merchandise. Here the goal isn’t margin, it’s the shelf.

Reward the right customer

Loyalty ranges, subscribers, members, a region worth investing in. Targeted value that doesn’t leak to everyone else.

What all four have in common: they are conditional. They apply sometimes. A price field on a product can’t express “sometimes”, which is why merchants fall back on sitewide sales and coupon codes — instruments that are either on for everyone or off for everyone.

How It Works

Conditions say when a rule applies. An adjustment says what happens to the price.

1

Connect your storefront

Call the pricing API from your storefront, checkout or backend. REST, API-key authentication, OpenAPI documented.

2

Write your rules

Author them in the console or over the API. Order them, stack them, cap them, and keep them live, paused or in draft.

3

Get a price and a receipt

Every call returns the adjusted price plus the list of rules that fired and what each one contributed.

Three ways to move a price

Discount

Takes value off, as a percentage or a fixed amount.

Demand shaping, clearance, loyalty

Markup

Adds value on, as a percentage or a fixed amount.

Cost recovery, channel economics, handling

Fixed price

Replaces the price outright with an exact number.

Clear-outs, price-point merchandising

Four controls that make them safe

Order

Rules run in a sequence you set, each acting on the running price.

Stacking

A rule either composes with the ones after it, or takes precedence and ends the calculation.

Cap

A percentage rule can carry an absolute ceiling, so a discount can’t run away on expensive items.

Status

Rules sit live, paused or in draft — prepared ahead of time and switched on when needed.

Four kinds of condition

Timing

Date range, time of day, day of week.

Catalogue

SKU, category, tag.

Location

Country, region.

Session

Channel, device.

What it looks like in practice

Every number on this page is a live response from the pricing API.

The patterns worth seeing

The stack

Several small, targeted adjustments compose into a meaningful offer for exactly the right shopper — while nobody else sees a sale. A weekday-afternoon mobile shopper in California, buying from the core coffee range, picks up four rules plus the everyday baseline. That’s 28% off, assembled from a 10%, a 5%, a 4%, a 6% and a dollar. No sitewide sale was ever run. A desktop shopper in Texas on a Sunday sees a different number, from the same rule set.

 $20.00 base
 −$2.00 Off-peak weekday afternoon (10%)
 −$0.90 Mobile app nudge (5%)
−$0.68 US West Coast promo (4%)
 −$0.98 Single-origin coffee loyalty (6%)
 −$1.00 Baseline everyday saving ($1)
 ─────────────────────────────────────────────────
 $14.43 final price

No black box, no model to trust. The merchant wrote the rules; the engine shows its work. That matters for a support conversation, a finance review, and a regulator.

Precedence

Not every rule should compose. Clearance is a final answer, not an ingredient. The clearance rule is marked as taking precedence: when it fires, the calculation ends. Rules below it — including a second clearance reduction and the everyday baseline — are skipped, and no further discount can be layered on top by accident.

$100.00$54.01

The cap

A percentage is dangerous on an expensive item. On a $200 item, the 30% clearance rule wants to take $46.29. The cap holds it to $25.00 exactly — the intent of the rule is preserved on cheap stock, and the margin is protected on expensive stock. One rule, no tiering, no exceptions list.

$200.00$129.31

Both directions

Discounts and markups run in the same chain, in the order you choose. An affiliate-referred desktop shopper buying fragile espresso equipment picks up a 10% afternoon discount, a +3% commission offset, a 7% equipment promotion, a +$2.50 handling charge and the $1 baseline. The costs of serving that particular order are recovered inside the same calculation that discounts it.

$150.00$130.82

The override

Sometimes the answer isn’t a percentage off, it’s a number. Branded merchandise resolves to $9.99 flat, regardless of what each item started at. Price-point merchandising without touching a single product record.

$30.00 and $12.00$9.99

Prepared, not improvised

Rules exist in three states, so pricing can be built before it’s needed. Black Friday is live now but dated to 27–30 November — it will fire on the day, unattended. A deeper afternoon discount sits paused, ready if a week trades badly. A desktop campaign sits in draft. None of them affect a single price until their moment.

About Revo

We built Revo because every ecommerce platform models price as a property of the product, when it is really a function of context. Merchants know their demand varies by hour, channel, geography and stock position — they just have no way to express it, so they reach for sitewide sales and coupon codes and give away margin they didn’t need to.

Revo is deliberately not an ML repricer. It is deterministic and explainable: you state the rule, and every calculation returns exactly which rules fired and what each one did. That is the trust model that survives a support conversation, a finance review, and a pricing-fairness question.

The Revo pricing API and merchant console are live in production.
